Fernhill Garden Care

Garden care in Edinburgh since 2015

Your garden, kept all year.

Fernhill is Morven Baird, a trained horticulturist, and her small team. We look after gardens on regular visits, fortnightly or monthly, and take every clipping away with us.

Visits from £68, fortnightly or monthly

The same gardeners, on the same day

Every clipping taken away

On every visit: the lawn mown and edged, the borders weeded.

Every other week, the same gardeners.

Your garden gets a day on our round and gardeners who know it. Fortnightly from April to October, monthly through the winter, and the price of a visit stays the same.

On every visit

The lawn mowed and its edges cut

Borders and paths weeded

Deadheading, and pruning whatever is due

Climbers tied in; pots watered and fed in summer

Swept up, and every clipping taken away

A text afterwards: what we did, what we noticed

Quiet battery tools, and no blowers before nine.

What a visit costs

Small garden

A front garden, a back green or a courtyard. One gardener, about two hours.

£68

a visit

Medium garden

Most terrace and villa back gardens. Two gardeners, about two hours.

£136

a visit

Large garden

Two gardeners, about four hours.

£272

a visit

Bigger gardens are priced after the free visit. Extra work is £34 an hour per gardener. No contract: a month's notice to stop or pause.

“The van's at the gate by nine every other Thursday, and by lunchtime the hedge is square and every bag's gone.”

Graham, Stockbridge

Hedges and small trees

Cut to the line.

Most hedges need one cut a year, from late August, once the birds have finished nesting. We set a line, cut to it, and take every clipping away.

Hedges

Once a year for most, twice for privet. Long villa hedges run £240–£420.

From £120

Small trees

Up to about eight metres. Bigger trees go to a tree surgeon we trust.

From £180

What we do, season by season.

Edinburgh's spring runs a fortnight behind London's, and the frosts hang on into May. So we work to the garden, not to the calendar.

Spring

March to May

First cuts, a spring feed and fresh edges

Borders weeded, cut back and mulched

Roses and late shrubs pruned in March

Summer bulbs in once the frosts are past

Summer

June to August

Mowing on every visit

Deadheading, so the flowering carries on

Pots watered and fed; tall plants staked

Wisteria pruned in July; hedges left for nesting birds

Autumn

September to November

Hedges cut, square and true

Lawns scarified, aerated and fed

Leaves cleared; spring bulbs planted

Seed heads left standing for the birds

Winter

December to February

Fruit trees and shrubs pruned while dormant

Bare-root hedging and roses planted

Paths, beds and raised beds built

Monthly visits; we keep off frozen lawns

Lawns, planting and small projects.

Alongside your visits or on their own, and always priced before we start.

Lawn care plan

Five treatments a year: a spring feed and moss control, two summer feeds, an autumn scarify, aerate and feed, and a winter check.

£195

a year, lawns up to 100 m²

£285

a year, 100–250 m²

from £420

for a whole garden

Small projects

Paths, new beds, raised vegetable beds and steel lawn edging, built in the quiet months by the same team. No walls, decking or big patios.

£1,180

two larch raised beds, filled

£1,650

a 12-metre gravel path

Garden clearances

From £180 for a van load.

Extra hours

£34 an hour per gardener.

Green waste

Always taken away and composted, never sent to landfill.

Gardeners, not mow-and-blow.

Morven trained in horticulture and spent nine years on a walled garden in East Lothian before she started Fernhill in 2015, with one van and twelve gardens in Morningside. It's named after the fern bank at the foot of her grandmother's garden in Colinton, where she learned to weed.

So we know what we're looking at: which shrubs flower on last year's wood, which seedlings to leave, and when a hedge should be left alone.

Morven Baird

Horticulturist, since 2015

Callum Reid

Hedges and trees, since 2017

Aileen Shaw

Borders and planting, since 2020

“Morven knew every plant in the garden by name, and which ones to leave alone. Three years on, it's never looked better.”

Alison, Morningside

Six parts of Edinburgh, each with its day.

Morningside

Bruntsfield

Stockbridge

Portobello

Corstorphine

Colinton

We work one area a day, so your gardeners come on the same weekday every time: Corstorphine and Colinton on Mondays, Morningside on Tuesdays, Bruntsfield on Wednesdays, Stockbridge on Thursdays and Portobello on Fridays.

Just outside those? Ask. If we're passing, we'll fit you in.
